Methodology
Data for this study was collected from the USDA FoodData Central database, brand websites, and established nutritional databases during our 2026 audit.
We analyzed a diverse range of 130 beverages including popular coffee chains, energy drinks, sodas, and teas.
To provide a fair comparison across drastically different serving sizes—ranging from 1oz espresso shots to 24oz cold brews—we calculated a normalized
"Caffeine per 8oz" metric. This allows consumers to understand the true concentration of caffeine in their beverages regardless of the container size.
Beverages with zero caffeine (like decaf or caffeine-free sodas) were included for baseline reference.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which coffee has the most caffeine?
Death Wish Coffee contains the highest amount of caffeine in our study, boasting an incredible 728mg per 8oz serving. Among major chains, Starbucks Pike Place Roast is exceptionally high with 310mg per 16oz serving.
Do energy drinks have more caffeine than coffee?
On average, standard brewed coffee actually has more caffeine per ounce than many standard energy drinks. An 8.4oz Red Bull contains 80mg of caffeine, while 8oz of generic brewed coffee contains about 95mg. However, specialized energy drinks (like Bang or Reign) contain 300mg per 16oz can.
How much caffeine is in a shot of espresso?
A standard 1oz shot of espresso contains about 63mg of caffeine. While espresso is highly concentrated, a typical 8oz cup of brewed coffee contains more total caffeine (95mg) simply because of the larger serving size.
Which tea has the highest caffeine content?
Guayaki Yerba Mate (150mg per 15.5oz can) and Matcha (70mg per 8oz) are among the highest naturally caffeinated teas. Standard black tea averages about 47mg per 8oz cup, while green tea has about 28mg.
Does dark roast coffee have more caffeine than light roast?
No, this is a common myth. Light roast coffee actually retains slightly more caffeine than dark roast because the longer roasting process for dark roasts breaks down a small amount of the caffeine compound. However, the difference is negligible.
